Write it Right – Letter Writing Workshop

When our beneficiaries write to their sponsors, we understand the challenges they face. It is not easy for us to make them write loquaciously, if not creatively. We recognize that as Filipinos, we are not accustomed to writing letters, especially to strangers who do not write back. We are here to support them in this journey.

In hopes of improving their writing skills more than the writing mechanics, we started the workshop by identifying the parts of the letter. To make the workshop fun, we gamified it by including a die and rolling it three times to pick a character, setting, and problem for their letter. Divided into six groups, each selected a speaker who read the best letter.

Their letters , a testament to their hard work, turned out to be more organized and coherent, and they had diminished tangents. This improvement in their writing skills is a significant achievement.

The writing prompts, unexpectedly, brought out their creativity in a way they didn’t expect to be fun. This element of surprise and enjoyment kept them engaged and motivated throughout the workshop.
